than ruin my holiday spirit: Christmas trees removed at Seattle-Tacoma Airport

For more than 25 years, the airport has celebrated the holidays with Christmas trees over its entrances. But overnight, the Port of Seattle ordered all 15 trees removed.

The Port allowed “holiday” decorations to remain but decided to take down all the Christmas trees after a Jewish religious leader complained they were offensive.

The Rabbi says that removing the trees was not his intention but instead he wanted menorahs lit and was “appalled” by the Port’s decision to take them down in order to avoid a lawsuit.

It has come to our attention that in a recent broadcast of “The View,” co-host Rosie O’Donnell tried to mimic the Chinese language by uttering repeated phrases of “ching chong. . .”

We feel strongly that it is our responsibility to call attention to what we consider a mockery of the Chinese language and, in effect, a perpetration of stereotypes of Asian Americans as foreigners or second-class citizens. The use of the distorted phrases is insulting to the Chinese and Chinese Americans and gives the impression that they are a group that is substandard to English-speaking people.

Saying “Ching chong, ching chong ching, Danny DeVito.” is not insulting the Chinese nor is it insinuating that they speak lousy English. I saw the episode and while the line wasn’t terribly funny I didn’t think it was in anyway derogatory. Had Ms O’Donnell said “You want steam lice or flied lice?” now that may be seen as an insult. (personally, i think that’s funny too but whatever).
