Stephen King, on violence

His oped piece in Entertainment Weekly – “Videogame Lunacy“.

And if there’s violence to be had, the kids are gonna find a way to get it, just as they’ll find a way to get all-day shooters like No Country for Old Men from cable if they want. Or Girls Gone Wild, for that matter. Can parents block that stuff? You bet. But most never do. The most effective bar against what was called ”the seduction of the innocent” when this hot-button issue centered on violent comic books 60 years ago is still parents who know and care not just about what their kids are watching and reading, but what they’re doing and who they’re hanging with. Parents need to have the guts to forbid material they find objectionable…and then explain why it’s being forbidden. They also need to monitor their children’s lives in the pop culture – which means a lot more than seeing what games they’re renting down the street.

Thank you, sir.

  1. PpFt says:

In other words, they need to care?

    The question mark was rhetorical.

  2. gee says:

stupid parents are the cause of the world’s problems, remember?

  3. PpFt says:

The problem is that “lack of caring” cannot be attributed to stupidity (or the stupid) alone.

  4. gee says:

you’re stupid if you can’t care enough to be a parent to your child and expect the government to do it.

  5. PpFt says:

I would disagree, but my disagreement probably centres on my (perhaps overweening) tendency to regard the word “stupid” as being grossly overused in inappropriate contexts.

e.g. what about the converse of your statement?
You’re also “stupid” if you care too much and want to keep your child safe from everything that’s out there (including the “stupid” government).

IMO “stupid” needs to be better defined before being allowed to enter into discussions such as these, when better-serving words like “ignorant”, “apathetic”, “fearful” and such do exist.

  6. gee says:

stupid; commonly defined as “lacking intelligence or/and common sense”

maybe i’m not fully understanding your statement. But what’s wrong with calling those who care too much, “stupid” also? I generally see the over caring parents to lack common sense. The extremes at both ends are usually pretty stupid, imho. You’re stupid if you don’t care; you’re stupid if you over-care. Stupid parents, therefore, are the cause of the world’s ills.

    Well said King.
