Oh my god. Someone is actually talking about the state of school libraries in our schools.
Longtime Star Education columnist Nitha Sidhhu ponders on the utilization (or is that non-utilization) of our school libraries:
The function of a school library is supposed to be three-fold – “expansion of the school’s curriculum, enjoyment and entertainment.” Truly, a diversely-stocked library handled by smart executors and skilled personnel can create untold opportunities for serious, knowledge-generating, information-gathering, and character-enhancing activities.
But, frankly, I have yet to see a school library being used in the manner that it can be used … I think we’re aware – the school library is still not what it could be.
…
If [the library] is headed by an educated librarian (not a teacher and not a clerk) whose job it is to collaborate with, and aid teachers in their teaching and learning function, don’t you think a school library would achieve so much more of its full potential?
Yes. Yes yes yes yes I dooooooo. HIRE ME!!!! I’ll start a goddamn education revolution!
Dammit. They don’t like change. Teachers will hate it.
Nevermind. Carry on with the status quo…
