the awesomeness of Star Trek

let me tell you it.

I am a fan but no purist. Wasn’t too sure about the whole idea of ST getting ‘reimagined’ but when I saw the product, I understand now.

I tried to find something really obvious about the movie that I could hate but I got nothing for ya.

The pace of the story was balanced and there’s action from beginning to end. The necessary expository scenes did not drag on. Hooray for good writing! Although the writers seem to have stolen elements from Star Wars and BSG in a couple scenes but that’s okay.

The actors were all solid choices. Yea, I made fun of the casting awhile back saying that the bridge was being overrun by The O.C. teens. Zachary Quinto is much better as Spock then he is as Sylar on Heroes. It is all a delicate balance between the actor’s own interpretation of the characters while honoring the personalities created by the original cast. And I think this bunch have done it all justice.

While the special FX in this movie was indeed super fan-fucking-tastic, it was all present to support the story not detract from it . *cough*CrystalSkull*cough*

Ditto for the sound design (just listen to some of the “old school” cheesy beeps and blorps sounding like they belong in this slicker ST world).

I’m thinking those who like ST mainly because of the utopian philosophies it promotes are gonna be put off by the story line. It lacks the macro social commentary that we’re used to in the world of ST. Instead, it’s about the individual and the choices me make. Not to mention, this is not your mother’s Star Trek. It’s grittier. It gets down and dirty. It’s an unapologetic action movie.

A strangely unimportant point – the bad guy played by Eric Bana wasn’t really all that fascinating. But since the story was to mainly show the ‘origins’ of Kirk, Spock, et al, it’s really not that big of a deal that the villain by the uninspired name of Nero didn’t scare the pants off me.

I’m for sure getting the DVD when it comes out but there is no comparison between your television and a 30 foot screen (and THX sound, son!). This movie is like a great amusement thrill ride – when it’s over you say, “Woah, let’s do that again,’ and run to line up for another go.

meh…I enjoyed the movie, but it just didn’t *feel* like Star Trek to me. I disagree that the pace was steady…I spent the first 20 mins or so waiting for it to pique my interest. I think the writing coulda been a bit slicker or maybe could’ve done without quite so many in-yer-face nods to the trekkies (lol…and I guess the fact that I noticed so many of them in and of itself makes me a trekkie! Tho I always claimed I was one, but ST and I are more like an arranged marriage..we started out resigned to one another but then I woke one day to find I didn’t mind it so much.) Too, it mighta been the douche sitting behind me, stating every obvious out loud (“ohhh, he’s got a red shirt. He ain’t gonna make it to the end!”) in a voice that implied no one else was aware of the oft ill-fated red shirts…
Tho I agree, the actors did a fabulous job of melding their own portrayals with characters who are so well known.
And in the end, more than wanting to run for another go, I was left to wonder…was this just a flick made to attract a following for a new series with these younger versions of the crew…
But, ya know, that’s just me :)

    THIS.

Nobody is going to outright say it but the new film *is* meant to draw in the kind of fans who think Death Race was an awesome movie without completely giving the old trekkies the finger. I don’t consider myself an old trekkie. I like my deep social issues but if there’s a space ship, there better be some kick ass battles. Maybe that’s why it worked for me.

Sorry about the douchebag. Though I’m sure my multiple fist pumping, and my loud cackling when Scotty said “I’m giving her all she’s got Capn!” must’ve annoyed a whole bunch of people.

just one more thought – to those who think this is ruinous to original ST.. it’s supposed to be a different, parallel world (cause in the original dimension, according to ‘old’ Spock, Kirk’s father go to see his son become Captain)

p.p.p.p.p.p.s. – the Kobayashi Maru… I can’t tell but within the vicinity of where we sat only my brother and I got excited about that reference.

annnnnd I just outed myself as a bigger ST nerd than I thought.

true, the parallel world is their catch-22 for fans who try and say But it’s NOT star trek!! Which almost made me angry, that they had to make it such an obvious catch…but since the movie was actually good, it didn’t. But I wonder if ol’ Gene would approve?
Also, I just realized that i almost NEVER check back here to see if you’ve replied to my comments. Interesting.

wait…also interesting….it opened at the same time here and there? Is that unusual?

maybe you’re a bigger nerd than you thought. hahaha.

I don’t know what Gene would say. But ST:TNG may have been his last true vision. And I’m going to try and find the source but I remember somewhere it said that Majel definitely approved. I sniffled a little when I heard her voice as Computer. Who cries watching Star Trek? Me.

the bigger movies have started to open the same time here to counter our little problem of um… piracy. ;)
